A Year of Editing Samovar Magazine

This is a little late because it’s not this issue but the last one that marked Samovar’s first anniversary, but having put out another today I wanted to mark it. A year ago Sarah Dodd (whose brainchild Samovar always was, and who picked the name) Greg West and I put out the first issue of Samovar, sister magazine to Strange Horizons, publishing translated SFF.

We still have so many goals for the magazine, but I want to take a moment to enjoy what we’ve done so far. Thanks to our partnership with Strange Horizons, we’ve been able to pay writers and translators pro rates, and we publish the stories both in their original languages and English – that’s two things that were always super important to us.

Personally, I’ve learned a huge amount from working with my co-editors and the Strange Horizons team, both about the nuts-and-bolts of running a magazine, and about translation and stories in general. I’ve had the chance to work with some amazing writers too.

We’ve published stories and poetry in *breathes* – Finnish, Pashto, Chinese, Hebrew, Spanish, Japanese, Swedish, Greek, Italian, Irish, Nepali, Romanian, Yiddish, Filipino, Hungarian and Bengali.

Here’s to many more years, and many more languages, I hope.
